Handy application on electrical safety

A new app has been launched by the ESC which will allow anyone who is planning to move into a new home to do a quick visual check to ensure its electrical safety. The app - which has been released to coincide with the anniversary of the National Grid - will also be promoted to landlords to help them confirm their rental properties are safe. Designed to be as easy to use as possible, the app highlights potential dangers for each room and explains how to resolve simple, non-technical problems. Where more serious issues are flagged, people are advised to use a registered electrician.

Available for use on iPhone and Android phones, the ESC app can be found by visiting the App Store or Android Market, searching for ‘Home Electrical Safety Check’ and then following the download instructions. It is also available by following the links on the ESC’s website.

Periodic Inspection Reports

When? and Why? should you have a qualified electrician carry out an electrical test and inspection :-

Landlords have a responsibility that their tenants are safe within the property and should take reasonable steps to make sure the electrical wiring and items within the property are tested regularly. For a commercial building an insurance company will require the fixed wiring is tested at a minimum of every 5 years, Domestic landlord insurance is fairly new and some do not have a direct requirement and use the reasonable care line to cover this. We recommend our Landlords carry out a visual inspection report every year with a periodic inspection report being carried out every 5 years. This will be sure to pick up any issues within reasonable time to make sure the property is safe.

Home buyers are quite often instructed or advised by the building survey when purchasing a property to have the electrics tested fully by an electrician. A Periodic inspection report will follow on to check the condition of the wiring and any faults or safety issues will be highlighted. This is usually the best time to complete any remedial work required before the property is fully occupied and we quite often turn around a full test and any upgrades within the first few days that the property has been exchanged.

NICEIC approved contractors should be used for any electrical testing as we are trained to the highest standard and will produce a report with the highest level of detail. The Periodic Inspection Report is 6 pages full of information about the electrical wiring and the entire electrical installation is documented complete with any recommendations and observations. Be aware of electricians offering a cheaper, faster service which will not complete the entire testing process and will not pick up any potential safety issues. We have come across various electricians offering this service at a discounted rate and cutting corners on the testing process, we advise anyone to make sure you use an NICEIC approved contractor for this service.

The LED & Solar Revolution

We are currently in the middle of a revolution in lighting, the traditional incandescent and halogen form of lighting will soon be a thing of the past. With the requirement to reduce the way we produce and the amount of electricity we use has led to some serious research and development, the main players leading the way is the solar photovoltaic panels which harvest energy from the sun and the Low energy lighting technology.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology was previously mainly used in electronics for small indication lighting mainly on Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) but with recent developments by those crazy scientist in the labs at universeties and leading lighting manufacturers, they have produced some amazing results. We are only a few steps away from using LEDs for all types of lighting and some industry experts believe this may be the case within as little as 3 years.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels have also seen a technological boost, also previously used for simple small scale tasks. Major r&d has seen the capability of solar panels grow into a viable option for all domestic, commercial and industrial power supply applications. The government has introduced a financial system to help the initial growth of the industry which will lead into an established market and drive down cost over time to make this an attractive investment for everyone. Wireless iPhone Lighting Controls

Wall Switch

Lighting control systems are becoming increasingly popular in modern homes and we have recently been using the wireless switching technology as a brilliant retro-fit product. If you want to create a cinema room, update current lighting or just modernising your current lighting system, this can be a great option with low installation cost.

We regularly install wired cat5e lighting systems in new developments where major refurbishment is taking place where it makes sense to create a wired network to control the lighting system but when you are doing minor works or would just like to modernise the lighting controls, a wireless system can be a great way of achieving that without the disruption of running cables.

A dimmer pack is installed within the lighting circuit which is also a receiver, waiting for instructions via RF to switch the circuit to a pre-programmed level from a Wall switch. The wall switch is battery operated and simply sends the signals to the receiver. Multiple channels can be configured from each switch to create various lighting scenes. The wall switch uses very little power and the batteries last for years.

Another great feature is the ability to access the controls via a Smart phone application. The system can be integrated to your home WiFi Network to allow full control of all the lighting with a simple press of a button. This can also be used to control other items like motorised blinds, heating controls etc.

The Lighting Efficiency Report

We have recently introduced a new Electrical Report which has been designed by us to help customers choose the right Energy saving lighting. It demonstrates the huge amount of saving available by calculating the complete lighting installation and forecast's the results into one simple Report.

Everyone is aware that energy prices are constantly rising and that energy saving products are available but there are a number of popular light fittings which are not straight forward to switch to an energy efficient alternative. The very popular recessed light fittings are most commonly run with a 35-50w Halogen Lamp which can quite easily be replaced with a new LED alternative. The cost to replace the lamp will often be repaid within 2 years and will last ten times longer.

We do not offer this service as an individual item but have added this to our Electrical Testing Services which means every time we carry out a Periodic Inspection Report, we will also issue a Lighting Efficiency Report. This seemed like a perfect way to enhance our testing services while using our knowledge and connections to deliver the latest Energy Saving products to help customers save money and the planet!

We may also be introducing an online version of the form which will not be as detailed as the Report carried out by an Engineer but will allow customers to do rough calculations and purchase the recommended products.

As you may have noticed, we have improved our website recently to include more information about our services and some new features to hopefully make our services more efficient. The main changes are as follows :-

New booking system integrated to allow customers to book Periodic Inspection Reports directly through the website. Our rates are listed on the testing services page and any bookings go directly into our calendar of the available Engineer. Pretty smooth!
Lighting Efficiency Report information has been added to run a long side our new booking system. This is a new unique report we are offering FREE with all Electrical certificates to promote the new LED energy saving products which we have extensive experience with. Save up to 80% on lighting cost!
Facebook and twitter links have been added to give everyone access to these popular social and business assets. We will be updating these regularly with recent and upcoming projects, company developments and any other interesting, cool stuff we want to share with you!

The design and layout has remained the same as this have proved popular with some good feedback and we did not feel the need to change it up, maybe next year!
